  • How to set powerful goals

    Aug 10, 2018

Incredibly, setting goals is something that only 3% of the population actually do. The definition of a goal is a desired result. Goal setting is the defining of that desired result and is a crucially important but often misunderstood skill. Most of the people who set goals don’t do it properly and end up with impotent rather than powerful goals.

The 97% of people who don’t set goals drift through their lives with vague dreams kicking around in their heads. Consequently, they often go around in circles with their lives. Not only do these people miss out on the sense of satisfaction that comes from going after a goal, but their mental and emotional wellbeing can be affected as well. This is because, when you don’t know what you want to achieve in any given area, you begin to lose hope when it comes to that aspect of your life. Your motivation, commitment, energy, confidence and expectation levels eventually begin to drop in those areas.

So setting goals is important but doing it in the right way is crucial. There are a 5 keys to setting powerful goals.

    1. A goal must be precise, concrete and definite. Vague and abstract goals which you are uncertain about have no power. Our brains are like heat-seeking missiles. When given a goal to shoot for, they are very well equipped for hitting the target. For example, there is a part of the brain called the Reticular Activating System (RAS). Its job is to notice what we notice. When a goal has been set, the RAS will bring things to our attention that can help us to achieve the goal.
    2. You need to write a goal down. Writing is like thinking out loud. The physical process of writing helps you to clarify and crystallise your thoughts. It also helps to embed your thoughts into your long-term memory.
    3. You must do a detailed plan for achieving a goal. It is very unlikely that you will end up exactly following the plan you initially produce, but that’s not the point. The very act of creating a plan creates a sense of momentum and enables you to know what your first few steps should be. If you were driving somewhere you wouldn’t just point your car in any direction and hope to reach your destination, would you? You would get out a map and plot your route so that you didn’t get lost or side-tracked. A goal is no different to a car journey in that sense. You need to set your goal and then draw up a plan for achieving it.
    4. Turn your plan for achieving the goal into a series of milestones, or sub-goals, that you will need to reach on the way to achieving your goal. Then convert the milestones into tasks that you will need to complete along the way.
    5. Finally, assign deadline dates to the achievement of the milestones and completion of the tasks.

When you follow this process, your goals will have power. The clarity, the precision and the level of detailed thinking which are involved in the following of these five steps brings forth into your being the motivation, commitment, energy, confidence and hope that you always need to achieve a goal.
