As an entrepreneur, it’s understandable to be concerned about the management of your work hours, as your productivity greatly depends on it. With good time management skills, you achieve the objectives set, you feel good about yourself and your motivation increases. However, when you do not manage your time well, you live in a constant sense of frustration and disappointment for “not reaching everything.”
If you feel that your day needs more hours since you can not finish your list of tasks, despite living chained to your computer, be attentive to the following useful tips.
Every minute spent on planning saves 10 minutes of execution. These are the famous words of Brian Tracey; this statement is of course very true. Therefore, if you want to improve your time management, plan each task you will do the next day. In this way, you will not work by impulses, and there will be an order of things to do in your head. In addition to daily planning, it is best to reserve a time to organize the week.
There is nothing better to start the day right than to take a morning walk to clear the mind and remove the lethargy of the night. In addition, exercise will help release serotonin and dopamine; the hormones that increase well-being and happiness.
Checking emails constantly makes us lose a lot of time throughout the day. Therefore, as an entrepreneur, it’s best to assign a specific moment of your day to review and respond to emails.
To prioritise your workload, you should ask yourself the following question: do all your tasks have the same importance? Surely the answer is no, as there are some that are more important than others. You need to have a method to establish priorities. So, start by organising your tasks into categories such as the below;
It’s always best to start on the most difficult tasks very in the early morning when you start work (after some exercise and coffee, of course). This way, the heaviest activities are out of the way as soon as possible. During the first hours of the morning, we are generally more productive; hence why it is better to carry out the hard and important tasks as soon as possible. However, do not try to perform 50 heavy tasks in a day, you must select two or three.
It seems obvious but it is very important to work in a place without distractions for better productivity. It is advisable to leave aside WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter and any other application or tool that distracts you.
The times of the day when nothing is on the agenda is a great opportunity to finish with small tasks that do not require great concentration. For example, when you wait for the bus or travel on the train to get to a meeting; even while waiting for your turn at the dentist. All these moments can be used in a practical way to answer emails or make brief calls.
A good way to improve time management is to group the tasks by thematic blocks. This way, you will have them classified, and it will be easier to finish them quickly. Also, instead of jumping between tasks that have nothing to do with each other, group similar actions and addresses one after the other.
Depending on the number of jobs and tasks you have, you should be able to calculate how long it will take you to finish a project to establish realistic deadlines. Otherwise, you will be frustrated when you do not finish on time. So, when you plan a new goal, be realistic with the completion period and consider possible contingencies.
